PDCA

Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) is a four-stage model, based on the scientific method, that can be continuously repeated for learning and improvement. PDCA is the model we use at IU Health for continuous improvement.

The PDCA model is also known as the Deming circle/cycle/wheel or Plan–Do–Study–Act (PDSA).

You can use the PDCA model at work in a variety of ways, including to:

The Stages

Plan
Identify a goal or purpose, develop a hypothesis, and define measure(s) of success.
Do
Try the change by implementing the plan, often on a small scale.
Check
Study results, comparing actual results with the desired results, and reflect on what you’ve learned.
Act
Take action depending on results and learning, adjusting the plan as necessary and repeating the PDCA cycle until desired results are achieved. Then standardize and share the new process.
